Indicator Guide & Glossary

A plain-English guide to understanding the charts, momentum gauges, and AI indicators used on your Stock Companion dashboard.

1. Candlestick Charts

Visualizes daily stock price ranges.

Instead of a simple line chart, candlestick charts show the full story of price movement during the day: where it opened, where it closed, and how high or low it went.

How to read:
  • Each candle represents one day (or week) of trading.
  • Green Candle: The stock price finished HIGHER than it started. The bottom is the start price, and the top is the finish price.
  • Red Candle: The stock price finished LOWER than it started. The top is the start price, and the bottom is the finish price.
  • The Wicks (thin vertical lines): These show the highest and lowest prices of the day.

2. SMAs (Simple Moving Averages)

Identifies the overall direction (trend) of the stock.

An SMA is a line showing the average closing price over a set period. It helps cut out the daily 'noise' to reveal long-term trends.

How to read:
  • 20 SMA (Orange Line): The average price over the last 20 days. Reacts quickly to recent news.
  • 50 SMA (Blue Line): The average price over the last 50 days. Shows the longer-term trend.
  • Trend Check: If the stock price is above these lines, it's generally in an uptrend (strong).
  • The Cross: When the 20 SMA crosses above the 50 SMA, it's a positive sign of upward speed.

3. RSI Osc (Relative Strength Index)

Measures if a stock is overpriced or underpriced.

RSI is a momentum meter that scores a stock on a scale of 0 to 100 to check if it has been bought too much (overheated) or sold too much (oversold).

How to read:
  • Above 70 (Overbought): The stock has risen very fast and is 'overheated.' It might be due for a pullback soon.
  • Below 30 (Oversold): The stock has dropped rapidly and is 'beaten down.' It could be due for a bounce back.
  • 30 to 70 (Neutral): The stock is trading in a healthy, normal range.

4. MACD Hist (Moving Average Convergence Divergence)

Spot changes in the speed of the stock's trend.

MACD is a momentum radar displaying vertical bars (the histogram) rising above or falling below a flat 'zero line.'

How to read:
  • Green bars above the zero line: Upward momentum is speeding up (buyers are in control).
  • Red bars below the zero line: Downward momentum is taking over (sellers are in control).
  • Shrinking bars: If the bars start returning to the zero line, the current trend is losing steam and a change in direction is close.

5. AI Market Sentiment Dial

GAUGE the public mood and headlines.

Our AI models scan thousands of global news headlines, financial reports, and social feeds in real-time to compute the overall mood about a stock.

How to read:
  • A whole number from 0 (most negative) to 100 (most positive), always shown with its word.
  • 50 is neutral. We call 48 to 52 neutral; 53 to 59 slightly bullish, 60 to 74 bullish and 75 or more very bullish; 41 to 47 slightly bearish, 26 to 40 bearish and 25 or less very bearish.
  • No headlines in the window shows as no reading, not as a neutral 50.

6. AI Strategy Signals

The system's final action recommendation.

Our algorithm automatically combines technical averages, oscillators, and the AI Sentiment Dial to output a final signal.

How to read:
  • Buy / Strong Buy: Both the charts and news sentiment are aligned positively.
  • Sell / Strong Sell: Averages and sentiment show downward momentum or negative views.
  • Hold: The signals are mixed, suggesting it is best to wait and monitor.

7. Free Stock Relationships & Supply Chain Contagion Graph

Map supplier, customer, and competitor networks for FREE.

Our 100% Free Stock Relationships Graph lets you map how companies interconnect across suppliers (e.g. STM & MRVL providing chips to NVDA & AAPL), cloud partners (ORCL & MSFT), and clean energy suppliers (OKLO & UEC).

How to read:
  • Supplier / Customer Nodes: See which component manufacturers supply tech giants before supply chain bottlenecks hit earnings.
  • Competitor Nodes: Spot competitive displacement when a rival gains market share.
  • Contagion Warning: When news breaks on a key node, evaluate supplier ripple effects before prices adjust.

Understanding Indicator Divergence

❓How can Sentiment be Bullish but the Strategy recommends SELL?

This is a standard scenario in market analysis known as Divergence. Public sentiment (news headlines, social media streams, press releases) can remain highly positive and hyped (driving a Bullish Sentiment Dial), while technical charts indicate a correction is overdue.

If a stock has been heavily bought, its momentum indicators (like RSI) might show it is overheated and overbought (above 70). The AI combining these signals detects the high risk of a pullback and issues a SELL or HOLD recommendation, advising against buying into the hype at the price peak.

❓Can Sentiment be Bearish while the Strategy recommends BUY?

Yes. This is the opposite form of divergence. When a stock is bombarded by bad news, panic selling, or negative market sentiment, the public mood is Bearish.

However, if the price drops rapidly to an extreme low, technical indicators like RSI will drop below 30 (oversold), suggesting the stock is fundamentally undervalued or due for a relief rally. In this case, the AI strategy might identify a strong contrarian buying opportunity and issue a BUY recommendation.

Stock Companion utilizes specialized artificial intelligence models to analyze incoming market feeds:

  1. The sentiment gauge reads every headline with state-of-the-art AI models trained specifically on financial data. While general-purpose AI models get confused by terms like "bullish sentiment", "leverage", or "volatile returns", these are fine-tuned to capture market nuance, achieving over 95% accuracy in detecting investor sentiment.
  2. A single AI model: a lexical, rule-based model built for short texts, which scores the headlines in a free account's dashboard news feed.

Serving as a real-time news sentiment radar and sentiment news radar, our backend collects headlines through the day, scores each one with state-of-the-art AI models trained specifically on financial data, and averages the recent readings into one whole number from 0 (most negative) to 100 (most positive), where 50 is neutral. This sentiment tracker radar is shown as the sentiment radar reading beside every stock, with a word such as slightly bullish or bearish, to help you read the news before you make your own decisions.

Spotting Market Sector Rotations Before They HappenLearn how to use sector momentum indexes to reallocate your capital effectively.
▼

Sector rotation is the movement of investment capital from one industry sector to another as the economic cycle progresses. For instance, during early recovery, capital flows into technology and consumer discretionary stocks. During downturns, it shifts to defensive sectors like Utilities and Consumer Staples.

Stock Companion's Sector & Trends dashboard acts as a global stock news radar and real-time sentiment radar feed for macro trends, tracking all 11 market sectors in real-time:

  • Relative Performance Index: Compares the cumulative monthly growth of each sector's core ETFs normalizing them from 0%.
  • Technical Health Score: Automatically computes simple moving averages (SMA-20/50) and momentum oscillators (RSI-14, MACD) across all stocks within each sector.

By observing when the line of a defensive sector (like Utilities) starts crossing above cyclical sectors (like Technology), smart investors can anticipate broader market shifts, protect their portfolio profits, and make stock buy/sell decisions with ease.

Backtesting Your Strategy: Why Historical Proof MattersWhy you should never trust a trading signal without verifying its historical performance.
▼

Backtesting is the process of testing a trading strategy or predictive signal using historical market data to see how it would have performed.

Stock Companion includes a free 12-month strategy backtest for any stock, on every stock page and at /backtest. It replays the AI signal one daily close at a time and shows:

  • Every BUY and SELL: the date, the closing price, the signal's reasons that day, and the headlines it read before that close, the same ones the live signal would have read.
  • What happened next: each round trip's return, and after each SELL whether the price fell (a loss avoided) or rose (a gain missed).
  • The comparison that matters: $10,000 following the signal against the same $10,000 simply held, shown whichever came out ahead.

Read it as a way to learn how the signal behaves on a stock, not as a forecast: a backtest cannot know the conditions that will apply next, and past results do not predict future returns.
